New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye left Sunday’s game against the New York Jets with a head injury.

Head coach Jerrod Mayo told CBs before halftime that Maye would not return to the game after being initially listed as questionable with a head injury.

Maye suffered a hit to the head in the second quarter. Jets linebacker Jamian Sherwood chased Maye on a scramble and made helmet-to-helmet contact from behind as Maye slid.

Victory did not draw the penalty flag.

Maye went to the sideline medical tent after the hit and then to the Patriots’ locker room. Jacoby Brissett took over at quarterback on New England’s next possession.

Maye completed 3 of 6 passes for 23 yards and ran for 46 yards and a touchdown prior to his injury. The Patriots were leading 7-6 when he left the game.

Maye, the No. 3 pick in April’s draft out of North Carolina, began the season sitting behind Brissett on the depth chart. The Patriots won their first game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but fell to 1-4 with Brissett. Maye took over at quarterback and made his first NFL start in Week 6 against the Houston Texans.

In two starts and one relief appearance prior to Sunday’s game against the Jets, Maye had completed 64.1% of his passes for 7.1 yards per attempt with five touchdowns and two interceptions. He added 68 rushing yards on 10 carries.
