France Election 2024 Live: NFP wins most seats, Macron second, Le Pen third

0

Cheers erupted on the streets of Paris late Sunday after results predicted the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) would defeat the far-right National Rally (RN) party in France’s snap parliamentary election.

A large crowd later gathered in the capital’s Place de la République to celebrate the left-wing coalition winning more seats in parliament, chanting the popular left-wing slogan “Youth are screwing the National Front”.

A voter leaves the booth at a polling station in Lyon, France, Sunday, July 7.

The NFP is an amalgamation of several parties, ranging from the far-left France Unbot party to the more moderate socialists and ecologists.

The coalition won 182 seats in the National Assembly, making it the largest group, but fell short of the 289 seats needed for an absolute majority, the French Interior Ministry said.

Speaking to a crowd of ecstatic supporters near Stalingrad Square, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the firebrand leader of France’s Anbo, said the results were “a great relief for the majority of people in our country”.

“Our people have clearly rejected the worst-case scenario,” Mélenchon said. “An amazing surge of civic mobilization has been caught!”

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France's Unopposed party and a member of the New Popular Front, waved to supporters in Paris after partial results were announced.

On Sunday night, police cleared the Place de la République and fired tear gas into crowds of people, mostly young people.

But the demonstrators were upbeat, and photos showed people across the city cheering and celebrating.

People react to predictions of results in Paris.

The mood was much worse for supporters of the far-right RN party.

The subdued atmosphere at the RN campaign event in Paris’ Bois de Vincennes park took a nosedive an hour before polls closed as it became clear the far-right coalition would come third in the polls.

People gather on the Place de la République in Paris to celebrate the preliminary results.

After the prediction is announced, Jordan BartellaThe RN’s 28-year-old leader said France had been plunged into “uncertainty and instability”.

Despite leading after the first round of voting, Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party and its allies won 143 seats.

With no party getting a majority, Parliament is likely to be deadlocked and split into three constituencies.

Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally party, told reporters in Paris that partial results showed her party would not win a majority.

The RN’s strong showing in the first round fueled fears that France could be on the verge of electing its first far-right government since the World War II collaborationist Vichy regime.

But Sunday’s results were a major upset, and show the overwhelming desire of French voters to prevent the far-right from taking power – even at the cost of a hung parliament.

Supporters of France's far-right National Rally party reacted in Paris after partial results were announced.

President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist bloc, which slipped to a dismal third in last Sunday’s first round of voting, staged a strong recovery to win 163 seats.

Macron’s supporter Gabriel Atal announced his resignation as prime minister on Monday morning. He appeared to take a swipe at Macron’s decision to call for a snap referendum, saying he had “not chosen” to dissolve France’s parliament.

People gather during an election night rally at Place de la République in Paris.

After parliamentary elections, the French president appoints a prime minister from the party with the most seats. Ordinarily, it means a candidate from the president’s own party. However, Sunday’s results leave Macron facing the possibility of appointing a man from the left-wing coalition, in a rare arrangement known as “collaboration”.

Speaking to supporters near Stalingrad Square, Mélenchon said “Macron has a duty to call for a new People’s Front to govern”.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick warned residents that Tropical Storm Beryl — expected to make landfall on the state’s southeast coast Monday morning as a Category 1 hurricane — could be a “deadly storm” for those in its path.

The National Hurricane Center Before making landfall on Sunday, the storm strengthened on its path toward Texas, warning that it would become a Category 2 hurricane.

The storm is forecast to strengthen again as a hurricane as it moves toward the Gulf of Mexico, and by the time it makes landfall in the United States, it will become a Category 1 hurricane.

Governor Greg Abbott warned Texans to prepare for the impact: “As Texans and visitors to the South Coast celebrate Independence Day, I urge them to make emergency plans to stay safe.”

Beryl has so far killed at least eleven people in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Jamaica and Venezuela after charting a deadly path through the Caribbean as a category five hurricane earlier in the week.

On Wednesday, the storm knocked out power to 400,000 homes and destroyed buildings in Jamaica.

Beryl was upgraded to a hurricane before landfall

With maximum sustained winds of nearly 75 mph (120 km/h), Beryl has been upgraded to a hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said.

It added that the hurricane will strengthen before making landfall on the Texas coast on Monday.

Beryl was an unusual storm, making it the first Category 5 hurricane ever documented.

It has caused significant damage throughout the Caribbean, particularly affecting the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Mariehamn, Union, and Grenada.

Beryl was one of the most powerful storms to hit Jamaica, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power.

The Houston airport may cancel flights as Beryl approaches

The Houston airport said there could be flight delays or cancellations as Beryl approaches Texas.

Even for flights departing or arriving at destinations outside the storm’s direct path, “airlines may need to adjust flight schedules and routes due to the overall impact of the hurricane on their networks,” it said.

It urged people not to seek shelter at airports during the storm.

“As the storm approaches, we want to remind everyone that our airports are not acting as storm shelters as people plan to stay indoors and stay safe from the storm. “We do not have the supplies and staff to accommodate people who seek shelter during the storm,” it said.

Texas residents experience power outages, flooding as Beryl moves closer to landfall

Rain and strong winds began battering coastal Texas after the powerful storm Berly left a path of destruction in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Although Beryl was still a tropical storm as it barreled towards Texas on Sunday, it threatened to regain hurricane strength in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall early Monday.

The storm was expected to make landfall in the middle of the Texas coast around Matagorta Bay, about 100 miles (161 km) south of Houston, but officials warned that the track could still change.

Texas officials warned the storm could cause power outages and flooding, but also worried that not enough coastal residents and beach vacationers in Beryl’s path heeded warnings to evacuate. “One of the things that raises our concern is that we’ve looked at all the roads that leave the coast and the maps are still green,” said Texas Lt. Gov. Don Patrick, who serves as the state’s acting governor. .

Amtrak canceled train service between Boston, NY

Amtrak train service between Boston and New York was restored late Saturday after a power outage on the tracks led the train service to cancel trains on the busy Northeast Corridor most days.

Amtrak said An upgrade A lightning strike caused a power outage around 10:30 pm but did not say where the strike took place. Earlier Saturday, the train service said the disruption was caused by a “defective breaker that caused a power outage on all tracks” between New York’s Penn Station and New Haven Union Station in Connecticut.

“Amtrak is contacting customers affected by these adjustments directly and offering them options to rebook their travel plans,” the company said in an update Saturday night. “Amtrak apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the disruption.”

Biden interview fails to assuage Democrats’ fitness concerns

President Joe Biden’s televised interview Friday night did not appear to quell an uproar within his own party to end his campaign after stopping a debate show against Donald Trump.

A fifth House Democrat, Angie Craig of Minnesota, joined her colleagues on Saturday in calling for the president to step aside, as reports suggest that others may soon follow.

In his rare prime-time ABC News interview, Mr Biden dismissed his debate performance as a “bad episode” and said only “the Lord Almighty” could convince him to end his bid for re-election.

Mr Biden, 81, is spending Saturday at his family home in Delaware before two public events on Sunday.

While no senior members of the party have called on the president to step down, unease among Democrats is palpable.

Some polls show Trump widening his lead over Mr Biden, and many worry he could lose the presidency and House seats along with his Senate majority if he leads the ticket.

On Saturday, Congresswoman Craig, who is running in a competitive district in Minnesota, said she doesn’t believe the president “can effectively campaign against Donald Trump and win.”

He said that while he respects the president’s decades of service, he calls on Biden to step aside as the Democratic nominee.

“This is not a decision I take lightly, but the stakes are high for a second Donald Trump presidency,” he said in a statement.

Minutes after the ABC interview, Texas Congressman Lloyd Doggett, the first House Democrat to call on Biden to drop out of the race, told CNN, “The need for (Biden) to step aside is more urgent tonight than I originally called for it. It is”.

He said it would take too long for Mr Biden to make a decision to withdraw, saying it would be “very difficult to get a new person on board who can defeat Donald Trump”.

Other House Democrats, including Congressmen Mike Quigley of Illinois and Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, called on Mr Biden to drop out of the race on Friday. They joined Arizona lawmaker Raul Grijalva, who on Wednesday called on the president to end his candidacy.

In his interview, Mr Biden refused to take a cognitive test and made the results public to prove he was fit for another term.

“I have a cognitive test every day. I have that test every day – everything I do [is a test],” he told George Stephanopoulos.

The response didn’t resonate with Congresswoman Judy Sue, a Democrat from California, who told Politico that her response was “shocking and not particularly reassuring, so I’ll be watching very closely every day how he acts, especially in spontaneous situations.”

During the 22-minute prime-time interview, Mr. Biden dismissed suggestions that allies might ask him to step aside, saying “that’s not going to happen.”

Mr Stephanopoulos emphasized the president’s ability to serve another term.

“I don’t think anyone is more qualified to be president or win this race than me,” Mr Biden said.

Mr Biden, who will speak at a rally in Pennsylvania on Sunday, thanked Vice President Kamala Harris for her support during an ABC News interview.

He has emerged as a top contender to replace Ms Harris if she steps down.

While the rest of the country tuned in to Mr. Biden’s interview, Ms. Harris was on Air Force Two, flying to New Orleans to attend the Essence Festival, an annual black cultural gathering.

Although Ms. Harris stuck closely to the president last week — flying from Los Angeles to attend a White House Fourth of July celebration, sitting in on Mr. Biden’s meeting with governors and his call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — aides argue. Business as usual for the Vice President.

On Saturday, he planned to sit down for a moderated conversation at the Essence event, the first of a series of July events that appeared to target black female voters, a key constituency for Democrats in November.

Although the event focused on celebrating black culture and diversity, it was hard to avoid the questions surrounding Mr Biden’s candidacy and the possibility of Ms Harris rising to the top of the ticket.

As she continues her busy public schedule, Ms. Harris will have to maintain the delicate balance of expressing clear support for her boss if Mr. Biden’s nomination unravels.

He has walked a tightrope over the past three years as Biden’s vice chancellor, never seeming to overshadow the president or seem too eager to take his place.

Hurricane Beryl hits Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, increasing risk to Texas

0

Beryl made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane near Cozumel, Mexico on Friday morning, battering the coast and knocking out power in several resort and vacation towns. Downgraded to a tropical storm Friday afternoon, it is forecast to continue weakening until it emerges in the Gulf of Mexico late Friday.

Concern is growing in Texas, where the National Hurricane Center predicts the storm will make landfall between Sunday night and Monday. By then, Beryl will probably regain hurricane status and strengthen enough to move ashore.

“The risk of hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge damage is increasing along the coast of northeastern Mexico and lower and central Texas late Sunday and Monday,” the hurricane center wrote Friday.

Computer model simulations running Friday showed the area north of Corpus Christi as a particular area of concern, although changes in Beryl’s predicted path — either north or south — are possible. Additionally, hurricane impacts can occur hundreds of miles away from the center of the storm.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, the Hurricane Center issued a tornado and storm surge watch from the Texas-Mexico border north of Galveston to about 60 miles southwest of Sargent, Tex. The watch area includes South Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Rockport and Matagorda.

Beryl made landfall in Mexico around 6 a.m. just north of the beach resort of Tulum, uprooting palm trees at 100 mph and pummeling communities with rain. According to Laura Velasquez, national coordinator of civil protection, there were widespread blackouts but no casualties.

Speaking from the region, he told reporters at President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s morning news conference that half of Isla Mujeres, another tourist destination, and half of Tulum had lost power. Power was also cut in several neighborhoods on the island of Cozumel.

Velasquez said trees and some power poles were downed by strong winds, but no one was killed or seriously injured. Authorities rescued many people from flooded homes.

The international airport in Cancun has canceled nearly 300 flights, while the airport in Tulum is not scheduled to reopen until Sunday.

Officials urged residents and tourists to stay indoors as trees and power lines were down.

The storm did not cause significant erosion of the region’s famous white-sand beaches, Governor Mara Lesama said, citing reports from the hotel association. The typhoon did not cause major damage to the five-star hotels, but hit the flimsy homes of poor residents of coastal communities. On TikTok, people described how the wind removed roof panels from ordinary houses.

“It was so windy last night that our power went out.” said a man who identified himself as John in Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun. “At dawn, the roof panels of our neighbor’s house in front of us flew off. The [car] The alarms haven’t stopped ringing.”

Leslie Diaz posted a video on TikTok from Playa del Carmen shortly before the hurricane hit. Her dog was hiding under the covers of the bed in fear.

“It’s 5 a.m. and there’s a terrible noise.” she said, as the wind whistled in the background. “It hasn’t hit the ground yet, but it’s already very strong.”

The region is prone to cyclones; In 2005, Hurricane Wilma caused eight deaths and billions of dollars in damage. So Mexican authorities took adequate precautions this time, sending nearly 10,000 army, navy and national guard troops to help victims and patrol the rain-soaked streets.

As of 5 p.m. ET, Beryl’s center was about to exit the Yucatan Peninsula, or about 610 miles east-southeast of Brownsville, Tex., and was moving west-northwest at 15 mph. Maximum winds dropped to 65 mph. The storm is expected to weaken until it re-enters the ocean.

Beryl is tracking west-northwest through the Gulf of Mexico through the weekend, where water temperatures are in the mid-80s, and the hurricane center is predicting at least gradual strengthening.

Model simulations vary on how quickly beryl solidifies and to what extent.

Hurricane-specific models often do not project rapid intensification. But large-scale models from the U.S. and Europe show what the Hurricane Center describes as “significant deepening as Beryl approaches the coast.” Abnormally warm waters and favorable high-altitude air patterns may fuel rapid strengthening.

But even the core of the storm could prevent Beryl from strengthening again After crossing the Yucatan it was disrupted and unable to rebuild itself.

Another wild card lands perfectly on Beryl. The models project Beryl is parallel to the Tamaulipas, Mexico, and Texas coasts, meaning that small wobbles in the path can have dramatic impacts on the final landslide location.

A significant influence on the track forecast is a decline in the jet stream over Central America, which will try to pull Beryl northward. But it remains to be seen when and where that tug-of-war happens. If Beryl is strong, it will be pulled north toward the lower and middle Texas coast, but if it is weak, it is more likely to hit northeastern Mexico. The storm’s evolution on Friday and model predictions suggest the former is more likely.

For those in northern Mexico or along the lower and middle Texas coast, now is a good time to prepare for possible hurricane impact. A landfall in the Category 1 or 2 range is likely, but if Beryl intensifies faster than expected, a major Category 3 hurricane is not entirely impossible. “Those of interest in these areas should closely monitor forecast updates,” the hurricane center wrote.

The weather service office in Brownsville, Tex., said the area could get 4 to 8 inches of rain depending on the storm’s track, which could cause flooding.

“Along the coast … expect life-threatening rip currents, high surf, storm surge of about 2 to 4 feet and coastal high seas,” it wrote.

The weather service office in Corpus Christi, Tex., urged residents to start preparations, highlighting the potential for strong winds, coastal flooding, high rip current risk and heavy rainfall.

Beryl became the first hurricane of the 2024 season, a Category 5 recorded in the Atlantic on Monday night. The storm — fueled by record-warming sea water — Broke the criteria It shocked meteorologists for its strength and the rate at which it intensified so early in the season.

The storm first hit Grenada, St. Vincent and other Caribbean islands on Monday, causing widespread destruction. – particularly on the Grenadian islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique – and killed at least five people. Three more deaths were reported in Venezuela.

In Cariaco, home to about 7,000 people, the typhoon “caused total devastation,” said Alison Caton, 50, owner of the Paradise Beach Club, which destroyed a restaurant and bar in Paradise Beach. Many of the island’s residents now live in temporary shelters in schools.

On Wednesday, the storm lashed Jamaica’s south coast, bringing torrential rain and winds of up to 80 mph that destroyed homes and downed trees and power lines.
