Update: Falcon 9 booster drone lands safely on board, ‘Lack of Gravitus.’

SpaceX continued its post-accident recovery with a planned back-to-back launch early Sunday morning. Two of its Falcon 9 rockets were launched from its pads in both Florida and California.

First the Starlink 10-4 mission will add 23 Starlink Version 2 mini satellites to its growing mega-constellation. Liftoff occurred at 1:09 am EDT (0509 UTC).

The mission comes after SpaceX’s successful return to flight operations early Saturday morning. It was the first Falcon 9 launch in two weeks, following the crash of the second stage of the Starlink mission, which launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base on July 11.

The Falcon 9 booster supporting the mission, tail number B1077 in the SpaceX fleet, launched and landed for the 14th time. It previously launched NASA’s Crew-5 mission to the International Space Station, the GPS 3 Space Vehicle 06 satellite and two cargo missions to the orbital outpost on its previous flights.

Eight minutes after liftoff, B1077 landed on the SpaceX droneship, ‘A Shortfall of Gravitas.’ This marked the 77th landing in ASOG and the 331st booster landing to date.

The Starlink 10-4 mission will be the 51st dedicated Starlink launch of 2024 and the 114th dedicated launch of the V2 mini-class of Starlink satellites.

According to professional orbital observer and astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell, there are more than 6,100 active Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit. On Wednesday, SpaceX announced that Starlink Internet service is now available on more than 1,000 aircraft, with the latest deal from airline WestJet.

Packers’ Jordan Love agrees to 4-year, $220 million extension, becomes highest-paid QB: Sources

0

The Green Bay Packers and quarterback Jordan Love have reached an agreement on a four-year, $220 million contract extension, league sources said Friday. The deal includes a record $75 million signing bonus and $155 million in new full guarantees, making Love the highest-paid NFL quarterback.

Love’s new deal ties him with Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow, who each make $55 million a year as the highest-paid quarterbacks on an annual basis. Those figures come on top of Dua Tagovailoa ($53.1 million per year), Jared Goff ($53 million per year), Justin Herbert ($52.5 million per year) and Lamar Jackson ($52 million per year).

Love’s “hold-in” agreement ends as the quarterback decided to skip practice until he receives a new contract. Love reported to camp on time and will participate in other team activities outside of practice.

Love participated in all offseason activities even without a new contract, but the quarterback’s representative informed the Packers shortly before the start of training camp that he would not practice.

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said at the start of training camp.

Go deeper

Paying Jordan Love that much is a big risk, and the Packers are no stranger to QBs

Love, 25, is set to enter the final year of his contract and is coming off a breakout first season in which he helped the Packers make a surprise divisional-round playoff appearance. He threw for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 17 regular season games.

He now heads into his second season as the Packers’ starter after four years behind current New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Packers and Love agreed to a one-year contract extension before last season, tying the quarterback only to Green Bay for the rest of the coming year. That extension was worth $22.5 million, including $13.5 million fully guaranteed.

Why did Green Bay make this deal?

The Packers shocked the NFL when they traded up for Love in the 2020 draft with four years remaining on Rodgers’ contract. Love bided his time three years behind Rodgers, and the long game paid off for him and the organization that had faith in Gutkunst and their new franchise quarterback.

The Packers hope Love can follow in the footsteps of Brett Favre and Rodgers and give them three consecutive Hall of Fame quarterbacks, though Love still has a long way to go to get there after a breakout first year in which he was arguably the NFL’s best quarterback. The second half of the regular season.

In his first three years in the NFL, Love only started one game, a 9-week loss to the Chiefs in 2021 on short notice after Rodgers tested positive for COVID-19. Love struggled under Kansas City’s relentless pressure as the Packers scored just once in a 13-7 loss, but Gutkunst was impressed with Love’s ability to withstand adversity. In addition to seeing Love behind the scenes and in practice for three years, the Packers felt confident enough to hand the reins of the offense to the unproven 24-year-old.

Their decision paid off, and Green Bay appears to have once again struck gold in the form of a player now tied for the highest-paid player in NFL history. — Matt Schneidman, Packers staff writer

Dow rises 650 points as stock market pulls back

0

Wall Street bounced back on Friday after a week of few optimistic economic signals.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 654 points, or 1.6 percent, at 40,589, paring steep losses from two days earlier. The broader S&P 500 rose 1.1 percent to end at 5,459, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index rose 1 percent to close at 17,357.

Analysts described the gain as a classic bounce-back rally based on continued optimism about the state of the economy. All three indices were hit on Wednesday as several leading technology companies posted disappointing financial results. But LPL Financial chief economist Geoffrey Roche said investors now seem to be taking on more risks as a “soft landing” looms large.

“We have an economy with low unemployment, rising wages, falling inflation and the Fed on the cusp of cutting rates,” Roche said.

The bounce-back comes on the back of favorable inflation data, which could increase the likelihood of the Federal Reserve cutting rates in September. Data released on Friday showed the central bank Preferred Inflation Scale The rate fell to 2.5 percent for the 12-month period to June, providing further evidence that the central bank’s rate hike campaign is working. On Thursday, a stronger-than-expected gross domestic product figure showed the U.S. economy grew at a robust 2.8 percent annualized rate in the second quarter, capping two years of solid expansion.

Leading the positive results on Friday was manufacturer 3M, which rose 21 percent after its financial results shattered analysts’ estimates.

Elsewhere, telecom giant Charter Communications gained about 15 percent after posting sales numbers that beat Wall Street’s estimates.

Strong fundamentals have led to an extension of the market’s 2024 rally, analysts say. At the start of the year, the stock market’s gains were dominated by a handful of big tech companies known as the “Magnificent 7,” which benefited from the hype surrounding artificial intelligence technology.

Gains now appear to be cutting across industries, said Michael Farr of DC-based investment firm Farr, Miller & Washington. The Russell 3000 index, which measures the most economically weak small-cap stocks, has risen 14 percent since the start of the year, outperforming the Dow.

“That Magnificent is shifting from 6 or 7 to some blue-chip stocks because things other than AI are getting bids,” Farr said.

Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez will step down next month after being convicted of corruption

0

Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez He will step down next month after being found guilty on all 16 charges in a federal bribery and corruption probe.

The New Jersey senator made his decision official in a letter to Gov. Bill Murphy on Tuesday.

“This is to advise you that I will be resigning as United States Senator from New Jersey effective the close of business on August 20, 2024,” Menendez said in the letter. A copy was obtained by NBC News.

He said he chose that date “to allow my staff to transition to other possibilities, transfer pending constituent files, allow an orderly process to select an interim replacement, and close my Senate affairs.”

Murphy, a Democrat, said in a statement that he had received the letter and that he would “do my duty to make a temporary appointment to the U.S. Senate to ensure that the people of New Jersey are adequately represented.”

Two sources familiar with the matter said earlier on Tuesday that Menendez had communicated his resignation plans to some of his employees. His departure date was earlier reported Via the New Jersey Globe.

As NBC News first reported last week, Menendez began calling on allies after he was convicted on July 16 of taking bribes, including gold bars and cash, for official business dealings to benefit Qatar and Egypt. He will be sentenced on October 29 and has promised to appeal.

Nearly every Democratic senator, House members and other key elected officials in New Jersey have called for Menendez to resign from his position, making it impossible for him to continue. Some threatened a vote to expel him from the Senate if he did not voluntarily leave.

Menendez is also under investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee, which said in a statement Monday that it had initiated a “judgment review,” a necessary step before recommending the senator’s outright expulsion or discipline. The committee said it had notified Menendez and his attorneys that the committee had unanimously voted to open the review.

Menendez cited the investigation as one of the reasons for his resignation. “While I fully intend to appeal the jury’s verdict through all avenues, including the Supreme Court, I do not want the Senate to engage in a protracted process that would distract from its important work,” his letter said.

Rep. Andy Kim, DN.J., is running for Menendez’s seat in November against Republican Curtis Pasha. Menendez has filed to run for re-election as an independent.

Before being elected to Congress in 1992, Menendez served as mayor of Union City, New Jersey, and in the state legislature. After serving in the House, he became a senator in 2006 and rose to head the powerful Foreign Affairs Committee. From that perch (and as a ranking member of the committee when Republicans controlled the Senate) he offered favors to foreign governments in exchange for bribes, jurors found.

The New Jersey senator was charged in a separate corruption case that ended in a mistrial in 2018; He had also denied wrongdoing in that case.

As war rages in Gaza, rivals Hamas and Fatah sign declaration to form future government

0

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah have signed a declaration in Beijing pledging to form a joint government, the groups said Tuesday, in the latest attempt to resolve their long-running rivalry.

Both sides said the deal, which offered no guarantees or deadlines, was only an initial step. Such earlier announcements have cast doubt on whether China-backed talks between Hamas, which has ruled the Gaza Strip for the past 17 years, and Fatah, the main force of the US-backed Palestinian Authority, could lead to a settlement. Parts of the occupied West Bank.

Israel immediately denounced the deal. The United States and other Western countries have refused to accept any Palestinian government that includes Hamas unless it explicitly recognizes Israel — a move that has helped undermine past unity efforts and the factions’ own rivalries for power.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV announced that both sides and other smaller Palestinian factions had signed the Beijing Declaration on “Ending Separatism and Strengthening Palestinian Unity”, pledging to form a unity government for the Palestinian territories. The agreement only provided detailed definitions of how they would work together.

“There is a possibility … but it is not big because there is no specific timetable for implementation,” said Hani al-Masri, an expert on Palestinian reconciliation issues.

The announcement comes at an important time War in Gaza In its 10th month of outrage and weighing in on Israel and Hamas Internationally Supported Ceasefire Project It would end the war and free dozens of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

The question of who will run Gaza after the war is one of the most difficult issues – and the unity efforts are driven in part by the Palestinians’ desire to provide the conditions for a post-war regime.

But Israel strongly opposes any role for Hamas, which it has vowed to destroy after its October 7 attack on southern Israel. While not presenting a unified post-war vision of its own, it has also rejected US calls for a Palestinian Authority to rule Gaza after the fighting ends.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah is deeply reluctant to share power with his longtime rival. Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian parliamentary elections. The following year, amid heightened tensions, Hamas overthrew forces loyal to Abbas in Gaza. It has ruled the impoverished coastal region ever since.

During the current war, a group of Hamas officials have said they do not want to return to ruling Gaza, and supporters have said they want to form a government of technicians agreed by various Palestinian factions. That government will prepare for elections with the aim of forming a unity government in Gaza and the West Bank.

Responding to China’s announcement, Israel’s foreign minister said there would be no joint administration between Hamas and Fatah in Gaza because Hamas’ rule would be crushed.

The agreement also stressed China’s Efforts to Play a Growing Role in Middle East DiplomacyAfter its success in mediating restructuring Relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

“China is still trying to gain credibility as a mediator globally,” said James Char, a research fellow at the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Officials from Fatah, Hamas and 12 other factions met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the end of talks that began on Sunday, according to a post on Chinese television network CGTN’s social media site Weibo.

The Palestinian Authority issued a joint statement announcing the deal, but gave no details on how or when the government would be formed, saying only that it would be done “by mutual agreement”. It said they pledged to follow previous reconciliation agreements signed in 2011 and 2022.

In the statement, all factions, including Hamas, are committed to creating a Palestinian state on lands captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war.

Hamas, which has directly called for the destruction of Israel, has said it will accept a Palestinian state. Based on pre-1967 war boundaries But it refuses to officially recognize Israel.

The Palestinian Authority, meanwhile, recognizes Israel and operates within the framework of the peace accords signed in the early 1990s. Those agreements were supposed to lead to an end-state in the West Bank and Gaza, but talks have stalled for years, leaving only isolated West Bank areas in charge. Many Palestinians view the Authority as corrupt, out of touch and a subcontractor to Israel because of their collective security coordination.

Fatah spokesman Jamal Najal said the declaration of unity was based on expanding the membership of the Fatah-led Palestine Liberation Organization, including Hamas.

“It’s a long way ahead and most of it will be implemented after a possible ceasefire,” he added.

Hamas Members have never been part of the PLO, the umbrella group of Palestinian factions under the Palestinian Authority. Hussam Badran, a Qatar-based Hamas political official, called the deal a “positive step toward achieving Palestinian national unity.”

Administration of US President Joe Biden envisions a renewed Palestinian Authority Governing post-war Gaza and seeking reforms, it creates a viable presence in the war-torn territory. Israel rejected the idea.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a small militant group affiliated with Hamas, released a statement after the talks that still “rejects any formulation that includes explicit or implicit recognition of Israel” and that it “demanded the withdrawal of recognition of the Palestine Liberation Organization from Israel.”

Bobby Witt Jr., ‘just kidding’, is just shy of the rotation

0

Kansas City, Mo. — On a night when he was hit by a pitch that shot his teammates, Bobby Witt Jr. fell into a small gap in the rotation, Salvador Perez and Hunter Renfro fell as well, and the Kansas City Royals were defeated. The Arizona Diamondbacks won their fourth straight 10-4 on Monday.

Whitt tripled in the first inning, doubled in the third and drilled a three-run homer in the fourth to deep left center to get the rough patch out of the way.

“Bobby! Bobby!” The crowd rose up chanting. Whitt came on in the sixth, hoping for a single and the first cycle by a Kansas City player in 34 years, but Arizona reliever Humberto Castellanos hit Whitt with his first pitch. The pitch shot Perez on the top step of the dugout as it screamed over the Diamondbacks, and the play only continued from there.

In the seventh, Royals reliever Jon Schreiber hit Gabriel Moreno, at which point both benches were cautioned, and Arizona manager Torrey Lovullo was ejected for arguing with plate umpire Jordan Baker. Perez exchanged words with Lovullo during a scrum near the plate.

Perez told reporters after the win that after Bobby Witt was hit an inning earlier, the home fans booed him.

He said that they also want to enter the field and fight. And Witt praised the support of his teammates, especially Perez, a 6-foot-3 senior, saying, “I don’t know if I’ll ever mess with him.”

Asked about the exchange after the loss, Lovello told reporters, “I didn’t say anything to Salvador Perez. I love Salvador Perez. He was an incredible major league player, and I’m his biggest fan.”

Witt had another chance in the eighth, but was retired on a fly ball to right field. Hall of Famer George Brett was the last Royals player in Toronto on July 25, 1990.

Speaking of Brett, Witt joins Royals legend, joining Willie Wilson, Carlos Beltran and Johnny Damon as Kansas City players with 10 triples in multiple seasons, according to ESPN Stats and Information Research.

“I’m just having fun, we’re going to try as hard as we can to put some wins together and just take it day by day,” Witt said in his post-game, on-field interview with Poly Sports.

Witt, who was named the American League Player of the Week earlier Monday, is 12-for-15 since playing in his first All-Star Game and finishing as the Home Run Derby runner-up, raising his average to .341. It was Witt’s fourth straight three-hit game, tying Damon in 2000 for the second-best streak in franchise history, behind Brett’s six in 1976.

The Royals (56-45), in position for a wild-card playoff berth, matched last season’s win total.

Cole Ragans (7-6) survived a shaky third inning to record his second straight win and eighth quality start in nine. He allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs in six innings.

The Diamondbacks took a 3-1 lead when Kevin Newman and Alec Thomas hit back-to-back doubles, and Ketel Marte hit his 20th homer with a two-run homer to left.

The Royals took a 4-3 lead in the bottom half with Witt’s double, Vinny Pasquantino’s RBI single and Perez’s two-run homer.

Witt’s three-run shot off reliever Miguel Castro in the fourth made it 8-3.

Renfrow pitched the sixth, Kyle Isbell had three hits and two RBIs, and Pasquantino had three hits for the Royals.

After giving up just one run in six innings in each of his first two big league starts, Arizona’s Yilber Diaz allowed seven runs and nine hits in three-plus innings.

The Conservatives have begun plans to elect a new leader

0

The Conservatives are set to launch a three-month leadership contest this week, ending with the announcement of a new Tory leader on November 2.

Nominations open Wednesday, with candidates needing a nominator, second and eight nominators to pass the first round.

MPs will choose the final four candidates, who will then have the opportunity to speak to party members at the Conservative conference.

MPs will then narrow down the final two candidates, with the final winner chosen by Conservative Party members.

The announcement comes as Mel Streide, the shadow work and pensions secretary Rishi Sunak’s partner, said he was “considering” announcing his candidacy for the race.

On Monday, Mr Sunak formally stepped down as leader of the Conservatives, beginning the process of choosing his replacement.

He will remain the party’s acting president until a successor is appointed.

The plans allow 11 of the remaining 121 Tory MPs a week to file their nominations – with nominations closing on Monday afternoon.

Voting for party members ends on October 31.

The party said that only members who have been members for 90 days or more before the close of polls and who were active members when nominations for candidates began are eligible to vote.

No one has officially confirmed their standing yet.

But other potential leadership candidates include former immigration minister Robert Jenrick, former home secretaries Suella Braverman and Dame Priti Patel, shadow home secretary James Wise, shadow defense minister Tom Dugentat and shadow communities secretary Kemi Patenock.

The BBC understands Mr Sunak wanted to stand down earlier to allow the party to move.

He is now likely to remain in office in Labour’s first budget after the party won a general election in early July.

Mr Sunak said it was in the “national interest” for him to remain in office to allow a “smooth and orderly transition to the new leader of the opposition”.

He said: “This will allow our party to fulfill its role as the official opposition professionally and efficiently.

“I believe this is what is best for the Conservative Party and, more importantly, for our country.

“I am confident that this schedule, determined by the Party Board and the 1922 Committee, will allow for a thoughtful, professional and respectful competition.”

Election 2024: Democrats promise ‘regular process’ to replace Biden, but questions remain

0

WASHINGTON (AP) — After some time for the president Joe Biden announced that Abandon his re-election campaignDemocratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison released a message: There will be no automatic coronation for his replacement.

“In the coming days, the party will undertake a transparent and orderly process moving forward,” Harrison said in a statement. “This process will be governed by the established rules and procedures of the party. Our representatives are willing to take seriously their responsibility to quickly provide a candidate for the American people.

This view reflected the reality during the vice presidency Kamala Harris It’s not that simple, as Biden and many other Democrats already support him — emerging as a barred option to become the party’s nominee. Also, for now, the party is not giving many details about what will happen next.

Some DNC members had already begun privately discussing contingency plans for the possibility of Biden stepping aside before formally deciding to do so on Sunday, and the party’s rules-setting committee. Democratic National ConventionBeginning on August 19th in Chicago, they will meet almost Wednesday afternoon to discuss next steps.

Harris must formally seek nominations from about 4,700 candidates Democratic Convention Delegates — including those pledged to Biden, as well as elected officials, former presidents and other party dignitaries known as superdelegates. He spent part of Sunday calling elected officials and representatives to reassure them of their support.

Biden won the Democratic primaries in every state, and Harris was his running mate on the ticket. South Carolina Rep. Her tapping him as her successor when she drops out of the race bolsters her case, as do endorsements from party heavyweights like Jim Clyburn. Even before Biden dropped his re-election bid, other top Democrats openly supported the vice president and urged him to continue to “pass the torch” to him. Poor debate performance against the Republican candidate Donald Trump Last month.

“People will weigh in, and they should. I think we’re seeing a lot of unification behind the vice president,” said Rahna Epting, executive director of the progressive organization MoveOn. The momentum is there, and it’s important for us to build momentum toward unity.”

Ken Martin, chairman of the Association of State Democratic Committees, which represents 57 parties in states and territories, said Harris was the obvious choice: “Having worked with President Biden, he is ready to be the nominee and our next president on day one. President.” He was endorsed by the 1.75 million-member American Federation of Teachers.

But democratic rules only state that delegates “in good conscience” must vote for the candidate they are elected to represent, leaving no mechanism for defectors. And some in the party have openly given their consent to file nominations.

There is intense debate among lawmakers, major donors and former top officials from the Biden, Obama and Clinton administrations about how to proceed, said a Democrat with deep ties to the Biden administration.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal conversations, argued that Harris would benefit from a competitive mini-primary ahead of the Democratic convention because it would help establish him as a strong candidate and reduce criticism that he was undemocratically anointed. . It’s a fee The Trump campaign Already sought to be used against him, and could loom large in the battle for undecided voters in battleground states.

Such a scenario could leave Democrats heading into their convention without a clear candidate and choosing one through a chaotic series of votes. During their party’s convention in Los Angeles, Johnson and John F. Kennedy and Johnson for support and John F. When Kennedy also played, a process not seen since the 1960s — it could mean seeking individual state representatives to lobby top Democratic candidates seeking to replace Biden.

If that happens, in addition to Harris, several leading Democrats, such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and California Rep. Ro Khanna, could run for the nomination. They said after Biden’s announcement that they were formally endorsing Harris.

Inside the White House, meanwhile, there is little expectation that Harris will mount a serious challenge, according to a person familiar with the discussions who requested anonymity to discuss private conversations.

Others who have been mentioned as potential contenders, including Shapiro and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, have endorsed Harris and appear unlikely to run in light of Biden’s support, leaving anyone with the fundraising advantage he hopes to have. Enter the field.

Further complicating matters is the fact that the DNC had planned to hold a virtual roll call to choose its nominee ahead of the convention in order to meet Ohio ballot eligibility rules. That state’s original deadline for the ballot was Aug. 7, and even if the Legislature has since approved legislation to repeal it, it won’t take effect until Sept. 1.

DNC lawyers say the party could face legal challenges in Ohio if it fails to name its party’s nominee before the state’s original deadline. But the Convention Rules Committee said it would not set a date for the virtual roll call — which could take place over several days — Aug. Before 1

Some Democrats fear other GOP legal challenges, including New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has supported staying in the race by arguing that replacing Biden could trigger “a presidential election decided by Clarence Thomas and the Supreme Court.” – Like what happened during the 2000 presidential election and the controversial recount in Florida.

At Wednesday’s conference rules committee meeting, members could create virtual roll call rules and nominate Harris or create an open process to select a nominee, said a person familiar with the process on condition of anonymity to discuss internal discussions.

“During the convention, we will have an opportunity to show the country and the world who Democrats are and what we stand for,” Democratic Convention Chair Minyon Moore said in a statement.

Harrison, the DNC chairman, avoided endorsing Harris in a statement, saying, “In short, the American people will ask the Democratic Party for next steps and a path forward for the nomination process.”

A somber Harrison joined the conference credentialing committee’s virtual meeting on Sunday, telling members, “I’m emotional.”

“I still support my president,” Harrison said of Biden. “My friends, we will get through this as we always do.”
