Live updates: Israel is at war with Hamas, Hezbollah, a year after the October 7 attacks

It frustrates many Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, who live in dire humanitarian conditions, enduring 12 months of Israeli bombardment of the enclave.

“We’ve spent a year in war,” Abdallah Hmeida, a cancer patient displaced from Beit Lahia, told CNN in the central Gazan city of Deir al-Balah. Hmaida lost her parents, brother and sisters in the conflict, he said.

“It’s agony. We don’t know where to go, we live in tents.

Nabila Shunner, a displaced woman from Sheikh Ratwan, said she had spent the past year in “fear, fear, hunger and sadness”.

Residents of Gaza told CNN they don’t expect the fighting to drag on for a year, and some worry it could be endless because they don’t see concrete efforts to secure a ceasefire.

Some residents say they have been waiting for months for the war to end so they can bury their dead or retrieve their remains.

Um Fadi, a displaced woman from northern Gaza who is now sheltering in Deir al-Bala, said she had lost faith in the world’s ability to deal with the bloodshed. Fadi, who lives in tents with her husband and five children, fears the coming winter, saying her family has no clothing to protect them from the cold.

For the Gazans, it was 365 days of “suffering, poverty, hunger, disease, instability and insecurity,” he told CNN.

“We are bodies without souls,” he added.
