President Joe Biden will return to Michigan on Friday, the campaign said in a Sunday evening release, as he tries to recover from the 2024 primary debate against Republican Donald Trump.
Biden, the Democratic incumbent, will visit Detroit, the Biden campaign said.
It will be Biden’s fourth trip to Michigan this year and comes 116 days before the Nov. 5 presidential election. Four years ago, Biden defeated incumbent Trump by 154,000 votes, or 3 percentage points. 51% -48%In Michigan.
However, Biden’s campaign has faced turmoil since the June 27 debate, during which he gave some convoluted and confused answers, at one point saying “we finally won on Medicare.”
The 81-year-old’s display prompted some pundits and five Democratic U.S. House members to shun him and allow Democrats to choose someone else to run against Trump this fall. Biden rejected their prodding and argued that he would win the election.
“I’m not going to let one 90-minute debate ruin three and a half years of work.” Biden tweeted Friday. “I’m in the race, I’m going to beat Donald Trump.”
Then, on Saturday, he posted, “I defeated Trump in 2020. I am going to defeat him again in 2024.”

Biden was interviewed by ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos in Wisconsin on Friday.
“I’ve convinced myself of two things: I’m the most qualified person to beat him, and I know how to get things done,” Biden said of Trump during the interview.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, both potential future Democratic presidential candidates, have continued to voice their support for Biden. Newsom campaigned for Biden in Michigan on Thursday.
“Joe Biden is our president,” Newsom said during a stop in South Haven. “He said he was all in. I doubled down and said I was all in. Not only that, but I’m here to prove it.”

Trump’s last trip to Michigan was on June 15 when he spoke at a Detroit church and conference of conservative activists. Trump took aim at Biden in a post on social media site Truth Social on Friday.
“Crooked Joe Biden must ignore his many critics and move forward with courage and strength with his powerful and visionary campaign,” Trump wrote.
