WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans on Sunday distanced themselves from Donald Trump’s latest insults to Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. During a weekend rally in Wisconsin In it he called her “mentally deranged”.

During a speech on immigration following Harris’ trip to the US-Mexico border, Trump stepped up his personal attacks on the vice president.

When asked if he agreed with the comments, Rep. Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., sidelined during an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”

“I think Kamala Harris is the wrong choice for America,” said Emmer, who is helping Trump’s running mate JD Vance prepare for Tuesday’s vice presidential debate. “I think Kamala Harris is really as bad or as bad as the administration we’ve seen over the last four years.”

When pressed, Emmer said: “I think we have to stick to the issues. The issues are that Donald Trump fixed it once. They broke it. He’s going to fix it again. Those are the issues.”

Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a moderate Republican running for Senate, brought up Trump’s false claims that Harris, the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, had previously downplayed her black heritage. Harris attended Howard University, a historically black college, and has consistently identified as black and South Asian throughout his political career.

“I already called him out when he had an interview where he questioned her racial identity, and now he’s questioning her mental capacity,” Hogan told CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “I think it’s insulting not just to the vice president, but to people who actually have mental disabilities.”

If elected, Harris would be the first female, black, and South Asian president. He did not comment on Trump’s latest attacks, but when asked about other comments, it was ” Same old show.
