Salmonella outbreak at Avondale taqueria leaves 10 hospitalized

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during Thanksgiving, 74 cases of salmonella, including 1 death, were linked to raw turkey products.

CHICAGO – Two health agencies are investigating after a salmonella outbreak at a taqueria in Avondale hospitalized 10 people.

As of Friday, the Chicago Department of Public Health and the Illinois Department of Public Health have identified 20 people with salmonella — 10 of whom have been hospitalized.

Evidence of the outbreak is a taqueria at Carnicería Guanajuato, a Mexican grocery store located in the 3100 block of North California.

Carniceria Guanajuato volunteered on Sept. 8.

Health officials said if anyone bought food from the prepared food section (taqueria or prepared foods in the grocery store) since Aug. 29, you may have been exposed to salmonella.

Symptoms usually last four to seven days and most people recover without treatment.
