CDC data confirms a per capita climb in Covid-19 hospitalizations
As cases continue to rise across the country, a new, fast-spreading coronavirus variant is sounding alarm bells for public health experts in the United States.
Doctors warned that the BA.2.86 variant – unofficially known as “Pirola” – could be of concern because it is a newly designated, highly mutated variant of Omicron that has sparked a surge in cases in several countries, including the United States.
According to Thursday’s bulletin Yale MedicineThe new variant has more than 30 mutations in its spike protein – located on the outer surface of a coronavirus – which helps it enter and infect human cells.
“Such a high number of mutations is significant,” said infectious disease specialist Dr. Scott Roberts. “When we went [Omicron variant] Since XBB.1.5 [Eris] EG.5, it may be one or two mutations.
“But these massive changes we’ve seen from Delta to Omicron are worrisome.”
A separate mini-wave of covid infections is triggered by the new dominant variant EG.5 or “Eris”. This has resulted in hospitalizations up to 39 percent since the end of July.

ICYMI: Justice Department Announces Charges Against Hundreds of COVID-19 Fraudsters
Hundreds of people have been charged with stealing more than $830 million in COVID-19 emergency aid following a nationwide operation by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday.
More than 60 of the defendants have alleged ties to organized crime, the department said, including members of a criminal gang accused of using stolen pandemic aid to pay for a murder.
“This latest action involving more than 300 defendants and more than $830 million in covid-19 fraud should send a clear message: The COVID-19 public health emergency may be over, but the Justice Department’s work to find and prosecute those who stole the pandemic. Relief funds are still a long way off,” said Attorney General Merrick. Garland said in a statement.
A three-month operation that ended in July resulted in the indictment of more than 300 people, underscoring the prevalence of the fraud.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco presided over the meeting of law enforcement officials, which was streamed live on the Justice Department’s website.

A variant found in New York City sewage BA.2.86
New York City Department of Health said A covid variant, PA.2.86, has been detected in sewage.
BA.2.86 is a sub-variant of Omicron and is spreading rapidly in the US and parts of the world. It was nicknamed “Brola”.
So far, early studies have shown that earlier variants and sub-variants do not carry a greater risk of causing severe disease. But there are symptoms that evade antibodies built up by previous infections or vaccines.
“Although we haven’t found it in a local resident’s sample yet, it’s definitely going around here,” the department’s press release says.
The NYC Department of Health said they are closely monitoring BA.2.86 and working with the CDC and WHO.

Deborah Birks has warned that Americans are underestimating Covid
Dr. Deborah Birks, who served as the White House’s coronavirus response coordinator under then-President Donald Trump, said in a new interview with ABC News that Americans are living in a “fantasy world” by ignoring the disease.
From August 13 to 19, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Covid deaths rose 21.4 percent and the number of hospitalizations rose 18.8 percent compared to the previous week. The number of hospitalizations in 2020, 2021 and 2022 is lower. Global health officials are monitoring EG.5.1, which is getting a new variant.
“We pretend that Covid is irrelevant,” Dr Birks said. “But I can tell you… you know two or three people have Covid. That means five to 10 percent of your friends already have Covid.
Instead, he argued, the United States should use mRNA technology to rapidly replace new variants no matter what year they appear.
“I think we want to do [Covid] Like the flu, because it was easy. But it will never be like the flu,” he said. “It will be with us between the waves.”
He added that the current administration should have taken a more serious look at the summer tide. “What the federal government needs to do is come up with a plan that says, ‘We’re not done with Covid, and Covid isn’t done with us.’
